    Sunshine Reported in Stockport

Hi All - I'm still getting to grips with the new Canon 5D Mk II and I've been practising in the local public amenity area, aka, Bramhall Park. While the leaves are just turning for autumn, a sunny day gave rise to the following images.

What I'm particularly concerned with is saturation. I noticed in some comments made about someone else's images, that they were said to be over saturated. These shots were taken with the Landscape picture style and its saturation slider set to 4 (maximum on scale of -4 to +4). I have not done any further adjustment in PP to saturation. To my eye the colours looked as they do in the photos, but do others think them OTT. In more general terms, is there a way, other than by eye, of objectively assessing whether saturation may be too much or too little?

    Thanks in advance.

They look alright to me; there is sunshine here but it was too late to go out when I got up unfortunately, been up half the night with the computer again and now I'm just chilling out.

The High Peak Trail has a bus stop at the southern end and I thought I might give it a go, since Cromford has a few interesting aspects but I don't know if I can get to Black Rocks because of the 1:5 incline. I'm thinking about it, however I have to be careful cos I doubt if the Chancellor would be impressed if some nutter had to have the air ambulance.

Looks nice where you live David, not so nice here at the moment and that is why I'm catching buses.

    David,

Colours look pretty good to me.I'm viewing on a profiled and calibrated monitor.#1 looks a little OTT to my eyes.
I shoot the 5DII also and love the results I get.I don't know of any other way to judge saturation than by eye.Others with more experience might have other suggestions.
I shoot RAW-Neutral picture style with everything set to zero and tweak saturation etc. in post.

Doesn't look to be any saturation problem from my point of view.

They look fine to me. I do like the composition in the 3rd. You have done well to control overall exposure in those conditions.

Stockport eh? I will be begging the loan of your Bentley Continental when my daughters decide to get married. For the non-UK residents; Stockport is a posh suburb of Manchester. Not as posh as Hale but posh enough to have glass in their windows and regular refuse collections. It is Manchester's Stockbroker belt. We have a ginnel they have a cul-de-sac. They have a Spa Leisure complex, we have a fight..

Seriously though nice area and Bramall Park looks nice. I may have to take a look. Don't worry I wont wear my shell suit and Burberry baseball cap

    Hi David
You're getting good results with your new baby, but I do think No.1 is over-saturated. If you look at the blue of the water in the background and also the c.a. in the trees top left and right you'll maybe see what I mean.

Very rich colours, David, but given the time of day that they were taken, I'd think they are not un-natural. Late afternoon always gives extra ping to colour. Mind you, I'm viewing from an uncalibrated laptop, so it may be out somewhat.

    Hi David,

I am not viewing these on my 'photographic screen' but the one I use daily at work. It is reasonable but to my eye one and two look a little OTT in the greens and blues.

Try taking shots at 0 , +2 -and +4 and see what you think is best.

    Re: Sunshine Reported in Stockport

Hey - Thanks everyone for taking the time to look, assess and report back. Overall, there maybe some over-saturation in parts of #1 (possibly #2), but my eyes are probably still OK for this. I'm going to do what Peter suggests and test more thoroughly with different slider settings. I may also revert to what Jim suggests: shooting in neutral mode and changing in PP. That's what I normally do with the 40D.

BTW, re Steve's comments about Stockport, it is true that where I live is a very pleasant environment compared to some that I could name, Steve . Also I drive a Honda, it's my wife who has a Merc

    Thanks again.

Yeah, that's all very well, but does it have the de rigueur Laura Ashley cushions in the back window?

    - you have my undying admiration for nonconformity. Thats like introducing Trotsky to the local conservative club.

You are not a premier league footballer are you. Stockport and Altrincham confuse me. I commented to wirevixen how many Mercedes dealers there were in Stockport...she pointed out they were actually hairdressing salons.

Yeah, that's all very well, but does it have the de rigueur Laura Ashley cushions in the back window?
My bet would be a few copies of Cheshire Life and a Support Your Local Hunt sticker...I have know to be wrong though....I went to the His Tonynesses school of social observation where you view socialist ideals through Ozzy Osbourne's blue tinted specs.

Are you implying I should become a liberal. No, you must have me confused with someone who wears a corduroy jacket and unbranded jeans with socks and sandals. Actually that would probably make me a general studies teacher in an inner city comprehensive school and they are always raving Stalinists until it comes to sending their kids into private education. What I want to know is where they get those leather elbow patches from. You certainly cannot jackets like that and I have yet to stumble on a leather patch stockist in the local shopping mall. Maybe they get their long suffering spouses to knock them up on the sewing machine at the same time they are lowring the hem lines on their floral pattern maxi skirts. Did I go off topic again...whoops
