    New visitors

Sitting on the couch this morning drinking my normal cup of coffee. All of sudden, I look up and see this guy sitting on the feeder. He stayed quite a while but it seemed like forever before I was able to get any good captures. I have no idea what kind of bird this is but it has a very cool plumage pattern. Never seen this one at the feeder before.

Yes, you are correct. I looked it up last night. Never heard of this but it's very colorful.

They are both sharper on the originals. It seems that by uploading, the photos become softer. I'm assuming that is the 'tinypic' software?

    Hi Brian,

    Yes, that is unusual colouring.

Shouldn't be - at least, not when viewed at 100% (i.e. 800 px wide) in LyteBox (and with no browser zoom).
They may appear softer when viewed just in the thread, because the browser is 'instructed' by the website to show them 700px wide.

Did you sharpen after downsizing to 800px wide?

    What size were the originals?

I expect you've read these, but just in case:

They look OK when viewed in the lightbox option.

I exported from LR as jpg with sharpening for screen option. Then, just uploaded using the 'tinypic' software. Am I missing something? Most of my shots seem softer posted to this site than others.

There are so many things that might be affecting your experience Brian, it's difficult to know where to start (especially as I don't know a lot of factors that might be relevant to the issue and/or how to resolve it), but I'll try ...

My assumptions: you are using a PC, not a Mac and that you are viewing on a screen which is at least 1680 px x 1050 px (W x H) and you are assessing sharpness when viewing your image in LyteBox (i.e. after hitting "F" key)

    1) When viewing CiC site; use keyboard Ctrl+0 (zero) to reset any browser zoom that might have been used in past.

Check to see if image sharpness issue is improved, if not ...

    2) I personally don't use "export for screen" options, so I'm not familiar with the options to advise you.
Instead, I prefer to be in full control of what is happening to the pixels. and achieve this as follows: from your full resolution 'master', for the size you used above, I would manually make a downsized copy of an image, downsized via "Bi-cubic" or "Bi-cubic (smoother)" to 800 x 533 pixels. I would then sharpen that image via UnSharp Mask (USM) in Photoshop with settings Amount 100%, Radius 0.3 px, Threshold 1. Then Save As a jpg and then upload that. Be careful when saving not to overwrite any 'full size' jpg image you intended to keep.

    HTH, Dave
