That would be a good test, Grahame. If View NX2 allows you to display a ruler, that would be icing on the cake.

    Mike,

Test completed. To save any confusion whatsoever I placed the RAW and camera generated Jpeg in separate folders prior to opening anything in NX2.

No 1 : This is the camera generated max size/quality Jpeg opened in NX2 and enlarged to 400%. No concerns.
Nikon NEF File Corruption or ?

No 2 : This is the NEF opened in NX2 without doing anything to it other that enlarging to 400%. Artefacts present on edges.
Nikon NEF File Corruption or ?

No 3 : This is the NEF opened in NX2 and rendered in 'Standard' picture control, default. No concerns.
Nikon NEF File Corruption or ?.

    Conclusions;

No 1, Jpeg is rendered in camera using in camera 'standard' picture control setting.

No 2, This I suspect is the Jpeg that is embedded within the NEF file and whilst it appears to be the same pixel size it may not necessarily have been rendered the same as the separate one the camera produced.

No 3, This shows noise as would be expected but no sign of the artefacts.

It's just something I am going to have to put up with and only need to be aware of if making screenshots.

    John,

Did a comparison today between NX2 and ACR regarding colour variations but it's not something that concerns me really or I would spend any time sorting.

    No 1 : ViewNX2 'Standard' picture control.
Nikon NEF File Corruption or ?

No 2 : ACR 'default settings' for my camera.
Nikon NEF File Corruption or ?

There's some noticeable differences in colour but nothing I would recognise as a concern to me.

What is noticeable, and I have tried it a number of times is that in downsizing converting and downsizing in NX2 to an image size of 1000px width it's rubbish, as can be seen looking along the top edge of the door.

Fascinating test results, Grahame. I suppose the reason I have never noticed the results relating to the first test is that 99% of my NEFs are opened in Capture NX2 using the Standard Picture Control. The others are opened using the Portrait Picture Control. (I don't use View NX2.) I had never heard of the issue that your discovered using ACR to downsize the image. (I also don't use ACR.)

You might be being unfair about downsizing in NX Grahame. 2nd hand info but I have been told that Adobe generally sharpen a certain amount when ever a shot is down sized. It does look like a poor down sizing method though.

The whites are different. Interesting that I feel I detect a shade more blue in the NX2 but that could be down to one of it's icc files I have used so I aught to just say different. I was curious because of the difficulty in getting the building colour correct in that nef challenge thread I started. Nex seems to get a little closer.
