Flowers have always thwarted my best efforts, too much wind or sunlight, or strain on my back.

I hear the back part. I am starting to use a stool and thinking of planting flowers at the right hight.

Yes, flowers can be tricky; and there is often so much in the way of competing elements to take into account.

With insects, at least you have a firm subject to concentrate upon. Providing you can get close enough without them running/flying away.

That is the one good thing about flowers; apart from wind movement, you can take as much time as you want and try different angles. Plus do a bit of pruning around the background.
