This was some time ago, a day when I went to the grocery, that I suddenly had a second look at the flight of steps leading down to the shop. My vision was befuddled, and I couldn't quite fathom what I saw or seemed to see. It was like the steps were moving or twisting, a bit like those funny stairs at the amusement park. The illusion was because of the shadow pattern over the steps in the sharp sunlight. I had to move closer to realise that nothing strange was going on, and that it was just my brain that played me a prank.

I've not seen steps that narrow before, is the main part of the photo actually some kind of baby buggy/pram ramp?

Yes, often there is some kind of ramp for prams in stairs here, and kids and youngsters often use them to slide down.
