Re: steam train the duchess
Good captures of the trains in full-steam action Paul, but I find the picture frames rather distracting. Also, the frames seem to hint that B&W was used to give the impression of an age gone by. However, for me the attraction of fired-up steam locomotives is that they appear to be breathing, living beings. So, removing the colour somehow seems to take away some of the impression of their vitality, and therefore some of the excitement that I would prefer the images to convey. Just my opinions, of course.

Same here, no to the frames.
Also find it hard to understand a square crop on a basically rectangular shaped object. The 2 other look fine in that regard.
Can we see the coloured versions?

Hi Paul,
I think the frames are also now masking (if you look at a histogram) the tonal range, which looks quite flat and under exposed on 2 and 3 especially. I think you'll need to let the headlamp blow to get more exposure in the steam. Local Contrast Enhancement would help too.
I quite like 'em shot from this angle personally.
Cheers,

Plenty of 'steaming action' there but, personally, I would like to see a bit more brightness.

Re: steam train the duchess
That first photo is fantastic in my mind. I looked at it and thought you had photographed a model train as the photo was so sharp yet smooth. Can't quite describe the look, but the definition between the tracks and the steam is so crisp. OK, I tried to make it sound like a positive critique. I give up! The first photo just totally appeals to me.

Re: steam train the duchess
Now that's more like it, Paul! B & W steam trains are for the pages of a history book.
In colour, this one is here, now, alive and hissing, and I am there in its space and time. I can almost hear the engine, feel the vibrations, and smell the fumes!
The first in colour is also my number 1 (the third seems a bit overdone).
