A room at Abbaye De Fontfroide-2 versions

I know HDR is usually for color photography, but I was experimenting with a black and white plug-in and I like the way this HDR image came out in black and white. This room at the abbaye is where the monks would go to complain and get things off their chests (nowadays we would call it a 'bitch session'). Which version do you like?

You've captured beautiful light and texture in this one. Well done.

I wouldn't agree with your statement, "I know HDR is usually for color photography ..........". What we usually see with a 'HDR' label on it is that 'look' that a lot of people describe as an 'HDR image'. It is one example of the effect of applying a workflow incorporating the HDR technique of blending images, to the processing of a final product.

But, since HDR is merely a method to extend the dynamic range displayed in a finished product, I consider it just as applicable to the production of a B & W image as to one in colour.

    Hi Don,
l like both versions, but for me I just felt it needed the columns straightened.

Normally I am not a fan of HDR images because tone mapping often produces "weird" colors. Your picture does have very decent colors. I like it. The B/W conversion is even more impressive. It fits very well in the historical context of the building. The picture lives from its vertical columns and arches, so perspective correction is a must in my opinion. Looking for more B/W HDRs.

I like the HDR effect in the original first image but was a little unsettled by the inward sloping columns. They look much better in the reworked image by JPS.

My first impression was of a dungeon scene from a video game (showing my age I was going to say Doom, and I have no idea what is current). It all just seemed so unreal to me.
I'd like to see the source images.
