Manotick War Memorial

I took this close-up of the Manotick war memorial early one morning last July. The light was very flat and I thought that it suited the very simple yet effective monument. A simple khaki painted plain metal cross adorned with a similarly painted helmet and mounted on a grey concrete obelisk. A dead leaf stuck under the helmet seemed befitting. A few fading poppies no doubt left from a remembrance ceremony held the previous November seemed to be hanging on. I added the noise and white vignette to give a sense of timelessness to the image.

Nice image, Andre. What makes it for me is the texture of the background. I think that does more for the subject than the addition of noise

I tried B&W and sepia. Neither one works because the grey and khaki tones all blend together.

We have our lives right now because of what they sacrificed for us. Thank God for soldiers and men in uniforms.

I don't know about God but I am certainly grateful to those soldiers who fought or are still fighting for our freedom.

The Great War was a horrible war, like any other. It was a war with a lot of new weapons, military thoughts and a lot of death for a few square yard. That's what makes it so memorable. To be clear, I mean 1914-1918.

If you wanted to produce a sepia version, a good boost to the saturation and an increase in contrast would give you enough tonal separation or in PS, boosting the yellow channel. Interestingly there has been a recent documentary in the UK which highlighted the part played by the arrogant egotism of the various European Royal Families in creating the conditions for WW1. It was quite an eye opener.

I appreciate the tip for converting to sepia. I will try that and might post the result in a new thread if it works.

Industrialization became the motor of development. Before it was mostly commerce. The "made in" label was a first sign of how far a country was. Now there are all kind of statistics.
And that rather new country Germany had a good basement for that industrialization. It became a to big economical power.
