    Gloomy Sunrise

Went for a short walk to cure a vodka hangover this morning... not the best of weather but the yellow tree caught my attention.

I might go back up later to see if the light is any better.

The building in the shot is Craig y Nos castle, mainly used for weddings and ghost tours these days; more info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig-y-Nos_Castle

    Mornin' Matt,

Difficult to be sure at such a small size, but are the verticals of the buildings leaning to the right (i.e. does it need an anti-clockwise rotation)?

For my taste; as a photo, this is a bit too contrast processed and saturated, but others seem to like your style.
... and yet, the more I look at it, it grows on me.

Bet it looks good at a screen filling size, although I understand your reluctance to post at such a size as I suspect this is the kind of image that might well get 'nabbed'.

The foreground 'snapped sapling' looks sad

Thanks Dave, you are right about the verticals!

It hasn't snapped by the way, its literally been blown over, the roots are showing!

Gloomy perhaps, but very warm composition. Nicely done.

I really like this image and the style. Just curious was this processed with HDR from several images?

I like this shot Matt. It would be interesting to see at different time of the day.

I think you're talking about the distant tree, with, as you say, roots showing - I'm talking about the sapling on lower left 'thirds' line in foreground, stem/trunk almost at frame edge and with the top half folded over to left. It is just below/in front of the other tree, but quite near you.

Great Matt image! I agree with Dave that it's not straight, which you already noted :-)

Should we draw the conclusion that vodka is good for creativity (well, it doesn't harm Matt's normal creativity), but that it does cause him to list a little to starboard

Nice shot, Matt. I think the warm colours disqualify this scene from being 'gloomy'.

    Re: Gloomy Sunrise

I think it was Christina (Brownbear) that was talking about 'style', and here in Matt's work is a good example of a photographer finding a style.

With a nod to Nandakumar (above) yes indeed Matt, you do tend to overdo but...and while it may not be something I would do, or buy, I do believe that your style has a (more than a niche) market.

There is a very 'animated' quality to this image (and many of your others), the kind of look where in animated movies one is a bit awestruck on how real the images look. And this is neither a criticism nor a condemnation; I think your PP style, as well as the images themselves work really, really well. They (perhaps contrary to your own title(s)) are not at all 'gloomy' but rather have a bit of an overstated happiness and charm to them. I suppose I could have eliminated all of the above and just said 'cool' but I felt it warranted a bit more of why I think it/they is/are cool.

P.s. I was once told that after the age of 40, hangovers are more like medical recoveries, so I don't know if I should envy you or pity you ;-)

I was born and raised in the old style too, Matt and the I find the images here at CiC tend to be more nicer in the eyes than in other forums (not naming names...) though I found a shot yesterday that is more like it, to my taste. Is this HDRed, Matt? I think you overdid the orange a little bit...

Yes, it was I. Matt's work came to mind immediately as a photographer with a definite style. I admire that it so distinct and seen throughout his imagery. I do wonder if a bird image by Matt would have the same definite style. (His image of cows and horse in landscape scenes do)
