yellow bellied sap sucker 2
I took this handheld with a 55-250 is zoom cannon. Manual exposure. shutter speed 1/640 aperature value 5.6 iso 1600 C&Cplease.

I am not really sure what went wrong with your picture. I took this picture with the exact same lens:
ISO 400 - 1/250 - f 5.6
No PP other than the crop and downsize.

Looks to me like the focus was off on both of them.

Maybe my iso set on 1600 Tim ,by the way I got one of those pileated woodpeckers across the street but he seems to stay 80 ft up in the trees .The bottom sapsucker was shot with a 500 mm mirror lens, maybe an hour later.
