As someone who does a lot of focus stacking to get more dept of field, I can't say that the shallow depth of fields has much appeal for me. It does however focus your attention on the part of the photo that the photographer wants you to concentrate on.
Have a merry Christmas and don't let this humbug creature ruin your day.
I go through phases. I have always bought "fast glass" so that I can do narrow DoF work, but lately have tended to go for images that are sharp throughout. I also tended to shoot in diffuse light but have started working with harder light as well.
Both shallow DoF and hard light are currently trending in still life and portraiture.
I think this is a good representation of the year I have been having in 2025.
How did you come to the conclusion that, right now, photography is moving in that direction?
What specific signs led you to that reading—what have you been observing, where, and for how long?
And, ultimately, where did that idea begin: was it the way people are taking photos, the aesthetic that keeps repeating on social media, or the kind of images that hold people’s attention the most today?
Thanks !
Have a nice and Health 2026 !![]()
