Yes, well coming across something like that is enough to put you off your cornflakes for a bit. I bet you felt the same as me when you came across this as when I was out mustering some sheep on one of our hills and came across a similar shed skin in the long grass. My reaction was if that is the 'before' I sure a heck don't want to meet up with the 'after!'

I would like to get a shot. But maybe with a telephoto rather than my macro lens

One thing nice about Alaska is that we don't have to worry about running across snakes. Much less a monster like this one must be.

Sadly the locals have laid waste to the habitat and decimated the population by hunting. There are very few big ones left.

The most disturbing part of your post Brian, is the statement "..found in the garden..." What species is it?

I think the shot is a bit confused Brian but there is some very good detail. Did you get a shot of the sloughed skin from the head?

I too would be interested in the species; I'm guessing a python, but would like a proper ID.

If it is a constrictor rather than a venonmous species I can imagine it could be a useful character to have in the garden - assuming you do not own a cat or small dog.

Python. there are lots of dangerous beasties here. The only snakes that worry me are the two legged ones.
