    Fascinating to me as well!

I'm confused, though, by your consistent use of the term, fill flash. My understanding is that the term is generally used to describe the situation when we use flash to fill shadow areas. Hence, the term fill flash. Typical use is when exposing for a bright background without using the fill flash would leave the subject in unattractive shadow. Another use is when the flash can brighten (fill) shadow areas of the subject without overly brightening the other areas.

Neither use seems to be the case in any of your photos of this cocoon. Instead, you're simply brightening the subject, which is a typical use of flash though not called fill flash, at least not as I understand the terminology.

As most people are aware here I'm not overly educated in photographic technology. So here's the best answer I can give you.

The Sony Alpha a58 has multiple flash settings; Back, Slow and Fill. I shoot using the Fill setting.

Glad you are enjoying the series.
