    North, East, South, West

Pics taken from Grahamstown's Mountain Drive. It's not much of a mountain, but quite interesting to see how the light falls from each point of the compass. (Two "North" pics because I couldn't choose between them).

    C&C welcome.

Very nice conversions, Simon! Rather than using the same aspect ratio for each scene, consider cropping to customize each aspect ratio to the scene.

Thanks, Mike. Would you mind illustrating the crops you're suggesting, because I'm not seeing them? 16:9? 1:1?

You really capture the vastness of the place. I like them, I like them a lot.

The common characteristic of all the crops I'm suggesting is that about half of the sky is removed. Doing so eliminates the competition between sky and land for me and draws the eye squarely to the distant view of the land.

I'd venture to say you could almost achieve the same effect by cropping the foregrounds too Mike, instead of the sky.

Nice shots by the way Simon.

Agreed. It really depends on whether the land or the sky is intended to be the primary subject. In these images, I gathered that the land was intended to be the primary subject.

Simon, it was quite easy for me to chose the 2nd of the North ones. Then the last of the shout. I guess I rather like the zoomed in versions more as with the far-off ones there is so much to look at. Just my opinion.

Thanks, Alan, and thanks Mike for the suggested crops.

Actually, no. I'd just dropped the kids off at school and noticed that the clouds were doing something interesting, so drove up the mountain to see what I could get of them. And I also liked the fact that they were quite different at each compass point. I get what you are saying about the composition, Mike, and I'm partial to the clouds, but I don't see any logical places in the pics where the foreground could be cropped.

That being the case, the next time you're in the area capture images composed so the sky is at least two-thirds of the image. Doing so will make the sky and clouds the obvious primary subjects and the land will play more of a supporting role.
