    First Light

This is a rework of one image "au natural" as it mostly came out of the camera and the second, a B&W conversion using mid-tone luminosity masks mostly just to learn how to use them.

I shot this image just moments after shooting the lunar eclipse I posted yesterday in response to a "shooting the Moon" thread. It was this fog which prevented me from getting the final shoot of the full eclipse, but frankly, while that would have been nice, I am not sure I would trade this one for that one.

I did a bit of cropping and cloning on the B&W image as well as worked the colors substantially prior to making the conversion and then reworking using the midtone masking technique.

Nice, but I prefer the original version.

    Hi Chris

First of all, nice photos, but I prefer the BW version. What I think would find interesting, is if you tried too crop out the sand dunes.

Both are fantastic images. Strangely, for me anyways, I prefer the original color version.

Yes, there are some nice subtle colour tones in the original which haven't fully transferred to monochrome. But I do prefer the slight crop of the second image.

It's funny that I entered both into two different competitions and the color received nothing while the B&W took Best of Show in one and a 1st place in B&W in the other. Now I think I should apply the same workflow to the color image and see if I can't pull out some of the more subtle colors as suggested by Geoff. Thanks for the input.

I love the subtlety of the colour version, Chris. To me, it is perfect as is.
