    Brian, nice capture, maybe not close enough but the current framing is spot on if you wanted to show the entire butterfly.

    I would tone down the background highlights a fraction, Brian, but the main subject looks fine.

    I agree but because there are so much green reflected in the white of the butterfly I couldn't figure out a way to do it that looked right. Suggestions?

    indeed it is. I was close to a meter away when I started shooting and he quickly left as I approached.

    For the last few months I have been using the 18-55 kit lens as a prime lens set at 55. Whatever skills I developed seem to have transferred nicely.

    Unfortunately quite often the case

    I agree but because there are so much green reflected in the white of the butterfly I couldn't figure out a way to do it that looked right. Suggestions?
    I think this is a case for a layer mask approach. The 'simplest' way would be to copy the image, maybe blur the copy slightly then adjust the brightness for the background and then carefully brush out the butterfly using a soft brush with feathering for a soft edge.

    There are other possibilities using selections (non contiguous) for the background areas, but they are more difficult/fiddley.
