    Peacock

Birds are not my usual subject, unless they make a part of a larger image, but while out with the family today we saw a displaying peacock. I didn't get a decent shot of the full tail as the background was very distracting, but I picked up the two below. I like the depth given by the shallow-ish depth of field, but I know many would have stopped down.

    Comments welcome of course.

    2. Feather detail - focus is in the bottom left corner. I'm not sure if this works.

Actually IMO this sort of shots of peacocks are superior to those displaying the entire fan. However, on the second shot a wider DOF would have worked better.

I agree, a narrower aperture for the second shot or crop tighter; maybe square or 4 x 5 ratio?. The bulk of the larger colour whorls are seriously out of focus which I find distracting.

Yeah, I agree Geoff and Dan - number 2 isn't working. Had it demonstrated a big change in depth of field it may have worked better, but even then it needed a more central focal point. I'm pleased with the first though. Thanks for the comments everyone.

#1 is very good - and very sharp where it matters; great capture.

No 1 certainly works well, it really helps in separating the birds head.
