Donald - I've been looking at this image and trying to figure out my feelings and now that you have posted Alone (2), I think I "got it".
What makes this image is the vantage point of looking down from above the subject. That is ultimately what makes this image special. The man is a fairly insignificant element except for his light-coloured hat, which draws the viewer's attention to him in an otherwise fairly abstract setting.

This is a true 'alone' picture. Regarding the stance of the person, I was thinking exactly as wendy did. but in the conclusion, i differ. I would have preferred the click of the next moment/movement, where there is a little spacing in between accentuating his movement forward.... keeping that point aside, it is a superb image and I fully feel along with Manfred regarding the vantage view point of this, which gives its real strength
