    Alone

I spent a few hours on Kingsbarns Beach in Fife. A glorious place that also means a lot to another member on here, not just me. I posted one from the session yesterday.

I wasn't there to take pics, but I had the Lumix LX100 in my pocket. My real reason was being there to reflect on changes and my affection for someone who has become very, very dear to me.

But, when the pic seemed to present itself ...........! Your thoughts and comments always welcome.

Nicely composed and converted, the expansive sky makes it look like the world is weighing him down.

    Love this Donald.

It's a beach that always reminds me of the insignificance of us humans and our many cares and woes. This captures that beautifully.

Thank you, darling. Like I've said to you elsewhere, I look forward to shooting with you on that beach, instead of several days apart.

Well said by both John and Sharon. The image does have a lonely, solitary feel to it.

Thank you for particularly observing that point, John.

I knew I had to work quite quick to get the composition as, obviously, the person was moving. But I did take time to try and position the horizon correctly in the photograph so that, indeed, it captured a very real sense of 'big sky:little person' that could then could be emphasised in the final image. So, your comments give me confidence that I got it right.

Ahhh, this is classic Donald. I love it.

There is a tiny bird on the horizon (left-centre) that I would clone out, but that's being uber picky and it's only because I see this is a "hanger".

It really is. The position of the person is just perfect, in between the two dark bands both vertically and horizontally. The point about the sky weighing him down is supported by his handheld hat, as if it's too heavy for his head to hold it.

For whatever reason, I don't sense a lack of clarity that I mentioned in the other image.

Good grief, you've got way better eyesight then me, Simon! Got it.

EDIT - I went back in a edited the original. I did not mean to lose it (the original) but I deleted it from Flickr and thus broke the link in here. Sop the image now showing is the 'corrected' version with the offending bird zapped.

Maybe I've got to admit, Mike, that I didn't set the other one up so well and did not nail focusing. Not sure, but I agree with you.

I think this little Lumix is very unforgiving if you don't get it right. Like the 5DS, but at the other end of the scale.

To take another of your comments, Mike, one of the features of the Lumix that I love is the electronic viewfinder. I am composing these shots looking at a B & W on the viewfinder, at the 1:1 ratio (or 16:9, or 4:3, or 5:4, etc) that will be the final image. I can compose precisely in the camera.

I can, of course, also do that with the 5DS.

I find that for my sort of style of taking photographs, being able to set the final image ratio in-camera and view it as such for composition purposes, is the greatest feature ever. I love it.

I do not see any pressure or weight. I just see his freedom

And that's fine too. Once I publish a pic, it for the viewer to decide what that image says to him or her. So long as it says something, I'm happy.

    Re: Alone

As already said, a beautiful shot. But don't forget the perfect wave breaking too. Like Robert I don't see pressure/weight - the figure is alone but the shot is not lonely.

That's funny, the image was there when I first opened the thread, but has now been replaced by a Flickr message saying it has gone away
    (after I refreshed the page)

Perhaps it has gone to the 'gull cleaners'

Indeed, that is what's happened, but the original wasn't meant to have disappeared.

    Re: Alone

I find myself noticing the small things lately in a photograph that make it work. In this case it is the stance of the man. He's not quite walking but not quite standing still either, which makes it totally different (to me anyway) than if he had been walking or standing still. Also his hat being off. It's like he is in the middle of deciding...something...not sure what, and that is what makes me stop and wonder what might be going through his mind. I like when a photo makes me stop and think, and not just stop and look, it that makes any sense.

It's not nice to brag. I have three cameras in my household and none of them provide that capability. Probably a symptom of cameras made too long ago that otherwise meet my needs.
