    Not quite Texas

In fact this yellow rose arrived for the Brides Birthday from her friend in NZ. I thought I should capture one of them and try a stack. I used all of the f-stops of the lens (Canon 100MM L IS) then used Zerene to stack them.

A little bit of PP to remove some slight blemishes on a couple of petals then a square crop and sharpened for web. I hope you like this one.

    Exif ISO200, f2.8 to f32, 1/15sec through to 8 Sec.

    Exquisite!

Only thing that might be added is some water droplets from a fine spray. The tiny spray bottles that I carry around to clean my glasses, if filled with water (or a water glycerin solution) is great for this use...

I can't normally get excited about flower images Peter but that is very nicely captured. Quite beautiful.

    Hi Peter,

    That's a VERY nice result.

I am a little confused by "I used all of the f-stops of the lens (Canon 100MM L IS) then used Zerene to stack them." though.

I have never stacked an image in my life, but thought it was achieved by shooting several images (at same f-stop) at different focus distances - the latter achieved by either turning the focus ring slightly between each one, or moving the whole camera and lens slightly towards the subject for each successive shot.

Dave the methods you describe are the usual methods used to capture a series of images for stacking. I have used both previously including the use of a focus rail to achieve the second method you've described. However for this image I chose to focus on one point of the Rose and then change the f-stop for each subsequent image to create this stacked image. I suspect that I may have achieved a similar result in terms of DOF by using every other f-stop rather than the full range.
Thanks for taking time to look and comment.

    Hi again Peter,

Surely just using the single f/32 shot would give the same DoF, if the focus point isn't changing?
For DoF 'widest' must win, mustn't it?

Stacking other shots (all or alternate f-stops) might reduce noise, but I'm not sure it is contributing anything with regard to DoF.
Or is it perhaps helping with Bokeh?

    Intrigued, Dave

Morning Dave, if I get time after a hospital appointment this morning, I'll check and then post the f/32 image for a comparison for you

I have not use Zerene at all but please do upload an F32 image. This is becoming most interesting as I am learning macro stack focusing at the moment.

Just for you Izzie and Dave. This is the f/32 jpg as produced in camera, I've not removed the blemishes on the petals just resized and sharpened prior to loading it via TinyPic

I wonder how it would have turned out at ISO 100 and f32...

    Was that natural lighting Peter?
I'm a SOOC type shooter (read as software challenged/limited) so always try to find the best way to get the shot without a lot of PP work.

Alan the single bloom was in a vase that I'd placed in position with a black card in the background. Natural light (read wet and cloudy) behind the camera, no flash or other additional light
