    Canon 5D

    Hello photo enthusiasts!
I just purchased a used Canon 5D to use along with my Canon 50D. I just wanted to experience for myself the difference in sensor size, as far as IQ. Is anyone still using the 5D?

Welcome to CiC. (well you're not really a "new" member, just haven't posted much)

Yes I am: my original 5D which I bought with my 20D. And I still have that first 20D, too. These were my first two DSLRs and I sort of can't part with either of them.

Subsequently came and went - 30D; 50D and a 7D (7D for a very short period sold it almost as new). I don't use APS-C DSLR very much now, so that's why I didn't continue those upgrades. My main working DSLR now is a 5DMkII.

The 5D is a marvelous camera: certainly the 5D MkIII will cream it, but never forget that marvelous images can be made with older cameras.

The 50D/5D combination as my kit was a very powerful combination and I used that kit for about four years and I worked both cameras very, VERY hard.

I am sure you will enjoy a Dual Format Kit.

    What lenses do you have?

I currently own a Tokina 80-200mm f/2.8, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, all EF lenses and a Tamron 18-270mm APS-C lens. With these two cameras, I should have it all covered.

The 28~75/2.8 Tamron is a very nice lens: I had a friend who had two and used them hard and extensively over many years for her W&P business - I think that you will love that lens on a 5D.

A fast 50mm lens is one I use quite a bit, the EF 50/1.8 is certainly a lens that is useful both on the 50D and the 5D - on the 5D you can achieve an extremely shallow DoF, but, IMO it is worth using that lens at F/2 or F/2.2 on the 5D because stopped down that little bit will assist the edge performance of the lens, when used on a 135 Format Camera.

I am ignorant of the Tokina 80~200/2.8, but that FL compass is very useful on both the 5D and 50D also.

BTW a little tit-bit of information: the Tamron 18 to 270 is in fact an "EF Mount" Lens.

Yes, it only covers the image circle of an APS-C sensor (as you noted), but the lens's MOUNT is "EF" and it will mount on your 5D, but you will get an optical vignette.

Thanks for the info. It will be interesting to see the difference in the two sensors.

I do have my 5D and love it to bits, will never depart with it, unless it dies...the IQ is very good, want to buy the 35 F2 IS USM or Tamron 35/1.8 VC USD SP in 2016 sometime, meanwhile using the Tamron 28-75/2.8 or 24-105/4 L onto it. Very good IQ, special sort of rendering, a true classic. Just got my 2 Bodies with the Mirrorfix 2 months ago back from repair. IQ at base level not worse than other 5D or 6D bodies. Many very good photographs during the past 10 years with the 5D original onto the web, i'd prefer it always to the latest APS-C Canon bodies, don't need tons of features, video, just the basic features. very reliable...nowadays depending onto the condition, can be had for as low as 200-300 bucks, especially if one think the images are due a lighter AA filter sharper than the technically newer, and quite better Nikon D700 otherwise..and superior skintones, too...for portrait photographers, but also landscape. 12.8 MP is plenty, and enough...even nowadays.

Yes, but now demoted to "drinking" camera - ie use in suitations where it might get dropped or beach sand.

What I notice is small screen and how relatively slow it is re Mark III version. That said the images are good, so long as one keeps the ISO down.

ISO 1600 is very good on the 5D original, even 3200 ISO good & useable, and one shouldn't forget about the latest advances during the past 10+ years in digital noise reduction (Nik Dfine 2, LR & PS denoise, Imagenomic Noiseware, etc...to name just a few Plugins.

I do also own the 50D - and i prefer my 5D all the time.
