I like it too. If I were to change it at all I may slice a tad off the left side just so the picture is not so centred all around.
And so it should. It's a beauty.
Good lesson for folks still learning about things like the 'rule' of thirds.
- Know that they are not 'rules', they're guidelines.
- Understand them and use them, because they are good and help produce good images.
- But ... learn and develop your skill so that you know when not to apply the 'rules' in order to achieve stronger and more effective compositions and you feel comfortable in doing so.
Yes this looks good. The horizon is half way which is normally a questionable composition, but in this case it does work well
Nice.
I believe it can also be made into 2 images.
Marvelous minimalism. I think it's a great shot with just enough added interest in the revealed foreground grass.
I was moving it around lytebox...you get very interesting views too...very nicely executed.
As I mentioned in my opening post, I took this photo shortly before joining this forum. What I did not mentioned was that it was only about four months earlier, after 50 years of taking vacation photos and snapshots at family gatherings, that I had decided to try to learn something about composition.
By the time I took the picture, I had "learned" several of the rules of compositions from books and web sites. That day, I was out scouting a location to photograph a sunset and was trying different angles and orientations when I spotted the dead grass and the patch of yellow snow. I took the shot thinking that they would make interesting foreground elements for my sunset.
I struggled trying to make the photo fit the rules of composition and every every attempt resulted in a less pleasant picture. At that point, I almost dismissed the validity of those rules. That would have been a serious mistake. They work more often than not. Taking them into consideration with every shot has improved my skills as a photographer tremendously. I still have a long way to go but "practice makes perfect". So I keep at it and enjoy myself along the way.
As for artistic success... that is a story for another time!
Kaye - Thank you.
Donald - Thank you. Your kind comments mean a lot to me.
Geoff - Thank you.
John - Thank you.
Vic - Thank you. I actually extracted four "acceptable" images out of this one. You can crop most of the sky out, crop all the sky and the tree line out, crop just above the yellow snow or crop out most of the sky and above the yellow snow. They all work to some extent.
Graham - Thank you. I am just starting to realize that less is more.
Izzie - Thank you. Exploring is how we learn.

I really love this one![]()
It pleases me too, Andre. I could see this as a poster size print. Well done.
