    Full Moon

Taken from the front of my house. I attempted the add some foreground to the moon shot, and chose to focus on the branch of the tree while using a small aperture to ( hopefully) also keep the moon somewhat sharp. I am not happy with the result, with either the sharpness or the composition. I feel that the tree was too prominent in the composition, and I did not achieve the sharpness I wanted. I am not sure why I did not use f 22, which should have given me better sharpness; I also took the shot hand held as I felt that with a relatively short exposure, I could do it without camera shake affecting the shot. I have read somewhere that if the exposure is less than 1/20" you should be ok hand held. Any truth to this? I could not get any further from the tree which I think may have improved the shot. I also used flash to provide some fill and illuminate the tree.

f/22 won't necessarily give you the sharpest capture, you might be sharper between f/8-f/11 you would have to test lens to be sure. You can handhold a lunar shot but considering all the other limitations of such an endeavor, movement of the moon, motion blur, wind against the leaves why risk it.

I would normally shoot at F8 or F11 too but I'd rather do it on a tripod with the MUP option and with a wireless remote control...and a fast shutter speed...just a thought...

Thanks Christina. These links were most helpful, and contain much info which I need to assimilate. Thanks again.

Thanks Izzie. I have to review the DOF concept as I don't seem to have it right. Thank you.

Thanks again Christina. This was also helpful and identifies one of the problems with this shot: with a 250mm crop sensor I really should have been using a much faster exposure to avoid blurring, or a tripod!

My pleasure. Indeed, a lesson I've learned with time.
