    Blood moon attempt

    Hi
I think I should have pushed the ISO a bit more for this and used a higher shutter speed. No tracking was used and I've got the focus as good as I could. Not perfect but its my first go at any moon shots. Any shooting tips for next time appreciated.

I think this is pretty good to be honest Steve.

I'm no expert on capturing the moon, I've done it once before and I'm sure I shot in shutter priority mode with a speed of 1/80. I then adjusted the ISO until I was happy with the results.

    Steve, I'd say pretty good.
I posted my captures yesterday, and the exposure settings changed from F19, 1/160ths, ISO100 for the full (unoccluded) moon, to f5.6, 1.6s, ISO1000 for the full eclipse.

in general though if you want to shoot the moon (rather than a general night sky), you probably need to mount or stabilise the camera, and shoot with mirror lock if possible. I was shooting with a Sigma 500mm telephoto to get as large an image as possible in the frame, but if you experiment with the settings by using spot metering to get a reading, (I favour Aperture priority, but Matt's preference for Shutter mode is equally valid), and then adjust (probably to reduce glare and optimise detail) you should be ok.

One thing though, if you can, shoot in raw mode since it will give you a fair bit of extra room to adjust in pp.

Quality/clarity of the final image can be severely effected by atmospheric conditions, ie air movement in the atmosphere (that kind of mirage type haze you can see on hot roads in summer). If you can try to capture the moon as high in the sky as you can. The closer to the horizon it gets the more chance of soft images.

    Good luck

It is good for a first try, Steve...and you are luckier than most of us...the next blood harvest moon won't be 2023...will I still be alive by then? so you will just have to contend with whatever full or any other kind of moons you can get to show for it...well done!
