    Burgermeister-Union Square San Francisco

Candid made at a horrribly contrasty time of day.
While my wife shopped with her friend, I prowled around Union Square looking for interesting people and situations to photograph.
I noticed a rather portly man whose cap and clothing gave him what I considered to be a distinctly European look and I grabbed this shot.

The main subject works fine, Robert, but for me the highlights on the right side are a bit distracting so I would selectively tone them down a little; or alternatively crop differently to lose that area.

    Geoff and Greg,
    Thanks for commenting.
I tried a square crop that eliminated our right side but the subject looked "cramped" and had no space to look into.
I never like the way my efforts to "tone things down" look, but I'll take a shot and see what I come up with.
Alternately I might try just cloning out the red sleeve and the man's face, and leave the crop as it is.

If you have software which has layers and masks it should be relatively easy to tone down those brighter areas, Robert. Alternatively, an Adjustment Brush might be worth trying.

When toning down the background of my insect photos, and some other subjects, I usually switch the layer Blend Mode to Luminosity so it affects the brightness without changing the saturation and colour too much and do the adjustment using Curves which can be controlled quite finely.
