I entered a 'Guardian Newspaper' competition once and when I saw some of the other entries I thought blimey no chance here then, but then I saw the winning entry and was left a tad confused It was blown, out of focus, blurred, head chopped off, ect ect. But the others looked professional so I decided it is impossible to win in competitions.

If your photo was square cropped and you know the judges maybe you stand a chance, because the image of the girl is excellent.

Residents of Arizona, New Jersey and Vermont are ineligible.

Great image, Duc. It has a lot going for it.

Thx Steve. I'll do some research on past years' winners. Btw, what do you mean by "square cropped" ?

@Kit: Thx. You know, i took this photo while teaching English to the Cambodian kids in a village. The girl was one of those.

I do not know. The rules say that residents of Vermont are not eligible because the contest is illegal in Vermont.

I "have heard" that Vermont calls it gambling if you have to sign over rights to enter. You are giving something of value to enter the contest, so you are taking a gamble.

I don't know if this is the case here, but it kinda fits.

OK I went to the site and read the rules. You have to pay to enter the contest. You do give them at least some rights. So, that makes the Vermont rules on gambling valid (in their minds.)

A bit like this but it may be better in a paper size.

I'm showing thirds on this and you will know where to put them, I would try to get them close to the eyes also 4:3 might be better or 10:8

Huhm, somehow your cropping doesn't work for me. The cropped half was there for a compositional purpose. It tells the viewers of the photos about how the children in a third world country look like through their messy clothes and all, you know, that kind of thing. The original one, imho, has two distinct layers and they together tell a story.
How do you think about that?
