    Nagoya wedding

As many of you know, the reason for all of the images from around Japan is that we were here for my oldest daughter's wedding. Being in the wedding party means very limited photo ops, so these snaps are from before the wedding and during the rehearsal. The ceremony was quite different from anything we are used to... The rehearsal took place 20 minutes before the wedding ceremony...

In Japan, the ceremony is just that, a ceremony. The actual marriage takes place when the marriage licence is signed and turned in to the government for registration, so Ardis and Testsushi have technically been married since the end of June (even though he just got back to Japan 10 days ago).

I traveled rather equipment light on this trip; my D800, three lenses, SB-900 flash and a Gary Fong Lightsphere. Plus of course, spare batteries and memory cards.

Very nice set, Manfred...especially the photobombing... Congratulations to your daughter and her groom. Was #1 a mirror shot? Did they have any tradition in the celebration? I asked because when my son got married, after the church wedding, there were a lot traditional event that follows like the serving of the tea by the bridge and groom to the parents, the clap meter, etc. I have not attended a Japanese wedding, hence I asked..

I sure do like the look on the faces of the bride and groom in the third photo. Is the item he is carrying in his left hand something that was used during the ceremony? If so, for what purpose?

A pair of white gloves, Mike. Purely wedding props and nothing else as they are held in the hands and not worn.

Thank you Binnur. Happy they are and they will be moving to India tomorrow. He has been there since January and at this point we figure they will be there for somewhere between 18 months and 42 months. After that, either another foreign assignment or a return to Japan.

#1 was definitely a mirror shot.

As for the wedding, it was definitely not something that was at all "standard" based on how we do them in Canada (and the USA). No "best man" or "maid of honour" nor any attendants of brides maids.

The ceremony lasted around 15 minutes in total and afterwards the guests were herded into a hotel ballroom for a formal meal. We had about a 30 minute wait and the couple made a grand entrance with music and spotlights. A formal 5-course Japanese meal was served, while the brides parents and grandparents went around and poured drinks for the guests.

The bride and groom had to make a short thank you speech, as did the groom's father as well as me. Afterwards, a slideshow showing both Ardis and Tetsushi growing up and finally a recorded thank you from the bride and groom.

Then we had a 4-hour break before the "after party", where some wedding guests as well as friends who were not invited to the wedding attended. This was held at a local night club. Again a formal entrance by the couple, in wedding clothes (so that the people who had not attended the wedding could see the outfits). A toast, open bar and buffet meal. Same slide show, a raffle and some throwing of packaged snacks. This lasted around two hours.

    Then we went home...

Very nice all round. It took me a while to understand the left handed camera.

Congrats to the bride and groom. I missed the fact that you were headed over there for a wedding. I was wondering why you were posting so many images from the one town.

The one town (or at least the metropolitan area) has a population of around 10 million, so there is a fair bit to see there. Nagoya is Japan's third largest city (only Tokyo and Osaka are larger). Nagoya is not nearly as popular a destination as Tokyo and Kyoto, on the tourist route. It was badly damaged during WW II, owing to the fact that it is / was a major manufacturing centre and one of the main aircraft manufacturing sites. This means it is a very modern city, but still has plenty to do and see.

We did get out of town a number of times; Tokyo for a couple of days, Gujo, Toyota, Matsumoto, Kanazawa and Sado Island (again for a couple of days).

Our daughter and son-in-law are now living in Bangalore, India have have plenty of space for us to visit (the invite to us has already gone out), so I wouldn't be too surprised to see a visit to India (the south this time) coming up in a few months.
