    That they do, but I'm afraid that the background is competing with your subject, the reds and that bamboo keep drawing my eyes away from the flower.

    do you think it would work better if the reds and yellows surrounded the rose or do you think they should just be gone?

    You might try darkening the bamboo to see how it works as it is difficult to remove it completely

    I agree that light and shade can often complement each other, Brian. I have quite a similar shot. By great fortune, the background and the stalk were in full shade and the flower itself was in full sun, so there was a lot of contrast in the scene. And yet the angle of the sun was such that the whole flower head was brightly lit. Astute observers can play "spot the camera-shake" on the beetle.

    astute observors with either young eyes or new glasses. All I see is a really nice shot.
