    Shugborough Hall

We took a look at this National Trust place last weekend. We'd gone out in sunshine and by the time we arrived, it was bucketing down, so I only have shots of the interior. It was the family home of the late Lord Lichfield - aka Patrick Lichfield the portrait photographer - and it was a real treat to see some of his images which were on exhibit.

This is my take on the place

    1 The Red Drawing Room

    Shugborough Hall

    2 The Saloon

    Shugborough Hall

3 and 4 The cupboard under the stairs................

Nicely done Kaye, out of curiosity did you have to have a photography permit to use your camera in the Hall?

These are especially lovely, Kaye! A beautiful set, but I especially adore the 1st and 2nd image, everything about them, including the b&w presentation (unusual for me).

I really like the compositions of all but the third one. In that one the subject isn't clear to me. For me, the ideal composition of the third one is a square format of the top left corner; I just love the way the viewer looks around the stairs at the photo on the wall in that one.

I don't advocate the need for punch and contrast in all images but these scenes seem to call for it and I notice it because all but the third one appear flat. Try raising the black point, lowering the white point and introducing a slight S-curve to determine if you like the results.

+1 to Mikes comments except that I don't dislike no.3 in that it shows context. Having looked at your WEB site though, I do wonder why you converted 1 and 2 to mono. The richness of the furnishing drapery looks well in colour. Incidentally, I also think the natural history shots on your WEB site deserve more exposure (sorry about the pun). You should post more of them here.

Thank you all for your replies, suggestions and encouragement.

Peter - no permit is required. Flash is not allowed and generally no tripods, but I have a beanbag I sometimes use. Also we often visit these places at slack times so that we can engage the guides in conversation and find out more about a property - this quite often leads to them allowing us to photograph where is normally out of bounds, e.g. they'll put up a blind for us briefly or let us step over the 'rope barrier'. As long as your images are for private use there is generally not a problem.

John - thanks for looking at the website - It's a fine balance of not wishing to bore people with too many photos that leads me not to post so many here too.
