    Pelicans Breeding Colony

This past weekend I was fortunate to visit the islands that are home to the breeding colony of my beloved Pelicans. It was a sight that was almost surreal int that there were nests everywhere. For every pelican you saw clearly there were 4 or 5 that you could barely make out but knew they were there. I thought I would share with you some of the photos. These are not particularly great shots but I wanted to share so for those who might never get the opportunity to see it in person. This is an island that is no more than 1/2 mile in length and fairly narrow. There are HUNDREDS of nesting Pelicans as well as other birds there.

The slow emergence of spring definitely has birds all excited. Nice captures. Were they noisy?

John I am assuming you mean the birds? If so, yes it was very noisy! There were a lot of laughing gulls as well and they are always SO loud. The pelicans were also very vocal.

Thanks for sharing this Barbara. I never really thought of Pelicans as nesting type birds since I've always associated them with the ocean and water.

Neither had I and I guess that was one of the reason I things I found so fascinating. Watching them fly back and forth with branches to make the nests was cool.

Barbara, while visiting the park this past weekend, the gulls and blackbirds were in a frenzy and the noise was terrible. I'm glad someone else had the experience.

Thank you for sharing this. I find it so exciting. It is good that they have this place to go which I presume is relatively free of predators.

Jill, Glad you liked them. They are safe from most everything except the natural predators. The island where they are located is federally protected as they are/were considered endangered. Chemical pesticides almost extinguished them.

    Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Heading down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a few weeks and always enjoy watching the Pelicans dive for fish in the ocean.

Yes...I thought we are going to Florida again at the end of the month for two weeks but we might have to wait until May or late June. 'House we will be staying in is not available...when I think of Florida, I think of birds, time to hone in my bird photography and join you bird-o-graphers too. So I am going to continue trying to perfect my macro shots at the moment and be good at it too like Grahame, David, DanK and the rest of the bug-o-graphers here... It is fun when you know you can shoot anything and turn something nice and great every now and then...

Oh, btw...my last trip was a disaster as far as birds are concerned so I am aiming for next time...
