Is this just because I'm not using a tripod or just inexperience? I'm using a Nikon D5100 and I've never done true Macro.
I also have the Nikon 105 and it is a wonderful lens. You have by now received numerous excellent responses but here's something not yet mentioned.

In macro photography depth of field is practically zero. For static subjects, with a bit of work and the right software you can increase depth of field almost arbitrarily using "focus stacking". The software I use for this is "Zerene Stacker" but there are others. With a bit of practice you can get amazing results.

I tried several stacking packages but Zerene worked best for me. If you are interested, try several as well before choosing. When it comes to software it is often the case that one man's meat is anothers poison.

    Best wishes,

One device I find invaluable in macro work is my IR remote shutter release, so I can fire the shutter without touching the camera. Most of my macro is at ground level so that the camera is on the ground or on a very short tripod. I picked one up for just a few pounds on Ebay for my Sony A55. I'm sure that you can find one similar for a Nikon.
