I think "contortionist" may have also worked for a title. Nice jot staying on target. As large as they are they go from flying into a dive amazingly quickly. Well done.
Oh I like that title! I may have to steal it for another I will post later. Yes they can be tricky. I tried to get a good splash one but found that they really don't splash much until the bottom half of the wing goes in. They could be olympic divers with the little splash they make at entry.
Here's a question for you Barbara, was he flying left to right or right to left before the dive?
Nice formation, good timing. Did you find panning in that direction a problem?
Thanks John, Not that I remember but there were about 8 or so fishing at the time I took them. I picked a single pelican each time and just keep my focus spot on the eye of that one from the time he/she left the water until he had splashed down, keeping my finger on the shutter button all the while. I have high burst continuous shooting and used it.
You are producing such beautiful bird photos! This one is super in almost every regard, nothing seems to be blurred or OOF and all is very sharp. Just because of the position the head is a little difficult to differentiate from the wing at a small view, but that is only the bird's fault :P
I would have thought you will say that it was a windy day that day that is why he was diving sideways...you know there is a saying in Oz that when it is windy, the crows are flying backwards...I notice that little birdies around here fly from side to side when it is windy...Pretty cute actually...
Anyway enough of my useless commentary, I like this shot very much too. Nice pose you caught there this time...very different..
Your coughing out some great stuff.
Aah...how does one differentiate the he's from the she's ?
You are very good at capturing odd positions as well as interesting and funny ones![]()
Jeez, your pelicans are sensational! Super sense of timing.
Looking at your exif data I see a shutter speed of 1/5312 second... Is this a true shutter speed? Super fast and you must have great light to allow such a fast shutter speed and low iso.
That's another great capture Barbara.
