help deciding which canon camera to buy

I recently gave my canon xsi camera to my daughter. I already miss it and want to replace it. I have a efs 17-85 canon lens. I am an amateur photographer and usually take landscape pictures when we travel. I keep looking at the 70d,6d or should I just stay with another xsi Will any of these canon cameras work equally well with this lens? And will the extra expense really be worth it for for my usage. Does this lens work equally well with any Canon?
    Any help will be appreciated

    Thanks

    Hi Pia(?),

Welcome to the CiC forums from me.

Could you do us all a favour please?
Could you click Settings (right at the top),
    then Edit Profile (on left)
and put your first name in the Real Name field
and where you are (roughly) in the Location field?
this helps everyone give you more personal and relevant answers, especially to questions like this - thanks.

I am not a Canon shooter, but Yes; your lens should work with any recent Canon 'crop format' camera, but not so well with full frame - although I doubt you'd considering those anyway on cost grounds.

    All the best, Dave

Welcome to CiC. Please add your name and location to your profile. We use real names here, and your location will often help people give you better advice.

EF-S lenses will only work with crop-sensor cameras: any Rebel, the 60D, the 70D, or the 7D (either model). They will not work with "full frame" cameras, such as a 6D. EF-S lenses cannot be used at all on Canon full frame cameras; the mirror would hit the rear of the lens.

For landscape photos, you don't need most of the fancy features that you will find on fancier cameras, such as advanced autofocus capabilities. If you are not printing large or shooting in low-light conditions, you would get little if any benefit from a full frame camera, and they are more expensive, heavier, larger, and require different lenses.

The XSi is no longer made. If you liked that basic type of camera, the two that I would consider are the T3i (not the T3) and the T5. They have the same body and sensor but differ in a few features. YOu can compare the features on the canon website.

Rather than suggesting a specific Canon Camera (before I get any further, your very decent EFs 17-85mm lens WILL NOT work on a 6D which requires a full-frame capable EF lens) I urge you to consider researching the available Canon Factory Refurbished camera models. These are available directly from the Canon Store http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/ca...http:ClickInfo or are sometimes available from Adorama or B&H in New York City.

I have purchased my last four Canon DSLR cameras (30D, 40D, and a pair of 7D bodies) as refurbished units and could not be happier. IMO the refurbished cameras have better quality control than new cameras off the assembly line. I have been shooting with the two refurbished 7D cameras for years now and have experienced no problems. AND... you get quite a break in the cost.

Another fairly general statement is that I personally prefer the xxD or 7D series of cameras over the Rebel series. The main reason I prefer these models is ergonomics and ease of use (for me). There is less need to work through the menus to change shooting parameters. Often on many xxD and 7D series cameras, the auto focus is somewhat more sophisticated. While fast and accurate AF is not really necessary if your only subjects are landscapes and buildings, few of us are that selective in our photography and it is nice to have good A/F capability in any camera.

The down side of purchasing refurbished cameras is that they are not always available in every model. The Canon site states how many of each refurb model is on hand.

    .
This alone was worth the jump from my old XS to a 7D

i was a canon shooter, and as everyone else has stated, yes, ef and ef-s lenses will work on canon's crop sensor dslrs. only ef lenses will work on canon's full frame sensor dslrs.

unfortunately only you can decide which camera to buy. comfort and function are what you need to look at. figure out which features are important to you. if possible hold each of the cameras in your hand and try to take some shots in the store. change the exposure settings, do whatever you would normally do while taking photos. whichever has the best ergonomics (one feels the best and has the best button placement for you) and has the features you want is the one you should buy. you should go to dpreview and learn/print how to change the exposure settings for each camera before going to a store to hold them.

unless canon has changed in the past couple of years, while shooting in full manual exposure the xxxd and xxxxd series (like the 550d and 1000d or whatever they're up to)has a button you need to press while rotating a dial to change the aperture. the xxd (like the 70d) and greater series has 2 dials, one which changes the shutter speed and the other that controls your aperture. this is part of that ergonomics thing i mentioned.

You must have reasons for liking these two – if you want to use that lens just buy a 70D and start making photos again.

    No.
To be specifically correct your EF-S lens can mount only on cameras with an EF S mount – those are only Canon APS-C format Cameras from the 20D and after and the 300D and after.

... and 1000D and after and SL1. Bill probably didn't include these models, though, because they tier below your old XXXD dRebel.

    haha.

I would have liked you in my Mathematics Lectures - especially the times when I had debates with the Lecturer.

    Close - but no cigar.

I didn't include the two xxxxD models because I have a slight philosophical issue singling them out as being a discreetly separate model stream from the xxxD Series.

However I reckon you deserve a point for mentioning the SL1 - my brain neglected that Series - and, BTW, mentioning my own added personal brain blockage: I cannot get my head around the (backwards) nomenclature "100D" (i.e. consistent with "xxxD" Series)

Maybe I can recoup some ground and mention another "sub-series" - "also the 20Da and after".

    Have a great 2015.

If cash is limited to Mark I 7D is available at bargain prices. Once you have used the toggle to select focus points, with the camera at your eye, you won't want a camera without it.
