Nice set, Rhonda. #2 and #5 are the standouts for me. I think you need to tame the highlights in #2, though ie the bright light on the white door. And I would remove the dead tendril from the lower right corner of #5.

I think the elements in the area you have shot in #4 have potential but this frame isn't working for me. I think because it is too busy at the moment. It has strong verticals on either side and strong horizontals in the middle, and then the diagonals of the vine in the centre all competing for attention. I might have tried just focusing on the two nails in the upper right, for example, and including the surrounding timber and a bit of the vine. That would have presented 3 contrasting textures.

These would look good in b&w, too -- especially #2.

#4 looks interesting for a textured shot, but I would love a separate shoot for those two curved nails at the top and its surrounds on close up...I like the edit of Jack on shot #1 too but the red barn although nicely done, you managed to clip at the corner of the roof? Just a few thoughts...

Rhonda more than anything else -cropping, recomposing whatever, I'd try to make sure I was taking the shots during the "golden hour" either just after sunrise or just before sunset. It strikes me these shots would look fabulous in that special light at the beginning and end of the day.

Thanks Izzie! I did clip the edge!! I took 2 other shots at a different angle but I preferred this angle not realizing that I'd clipped the eve off. I love that you notice that. Thank you!

Hi Graham! Excellent idea! I may have a chance to do that this afternoon! The light will be filtered significantly through trees to the south west of the building in the late afternoon, but if I get there while the sun is still high enough, I may not need to use my flash.

Good effort, Rhonda. I personally prefer the colour version, but it is interesting to compare the two. The highlights are better tamed in the b&w; see the wire, and the stud on the lower left for comparison. They could be better still, depending on how much data is left in your RAW file and the look you are after. If this were mine, I would likely play for hours with the colour HSL (hue, saturation and luminosity) until I reached my ah ha moment. Definitely one to keep around and revisit again and again as your processing skills grow.

Sorry, Rhonda, I just assumed you were shooting RAW. I don't think you said what kind of camera you are using, but chances are it gives you a choice between shooting 1) JPEG (also written as JPG), which is a compressed format, 2) the camera's native RAW format, which is not, or 3) both. Nikon calls its RAW format NEF, Canon calls its, RAW. If you want maximum creative control over your image, you should shoot RAW as you are limited in the edits you can make to a JPEG. If you think you might need to recover highlights or shadows, as is the case with this photo, you should shoot RAW. The reasons for shooting RAW are outlined in a CiC tutorial here. But you should know, too, that many professionals shoot high quality JPEG and JPEG alone. Thing is, they are better at getting the shot right in camera than you or me.

Just for clarity: even if you shoot RAW, the image you see in your camera's display is a JPEG. If you are shooting JPEG only, your "original unedited capture" is in fact an edited file, the camera being the editor. If you are shooting RAW, your "original unedited capture" is just that.

Very nice series of images.... grey matches with blue much; i specially liked the red planked barn; you may please check the parallelness of the edges of the building with the edge of the image while straightening them; black white conversion has worked really well; all the best
