    Cussie Cussie Rain Hat

    This fella was taking some shelter from the rain under the porch, I could not resist. We call them 'cussie cussies' here (not sure of the spelling) and I have found them wearing small plastic jars and bottle tops before.

    Cussie Cussie Rain Hat

    Lessons learned;
    a) remember to use my white balance card next time
    b) fit the circular mask on the flash diffuser

    Comments and suggestions welcome as always.

    Nice image with good details, sharpness and colours. I cannot make out what it is and what is that he is hiding under.

    Nor can I, no sense of scale.

    What is this Graheme,a bug? It looks like a creature which lives in the sea with a sheltering shell ...I like the eyes,it looks like a curious neighbour

    Yes, that's a tough one because if it were immediately recognizable (a fly or an elephant or a rose) it would bring along its sense of scale even if without reference objects in the frame. Maybe including at least a suggestion of the substrate (sand, pebbles and twigs, or similar) would have helped.
    It's intriguing and well shot otherwise, if a bit on the icky side.

    It is a common hermit crab of which you will generally see photographed on the beach. These guys use old empty shells and at times other similar objects as temporary homes as they grow to protect the soft body from predators.

    Size of them varies considerably, this one being shot at 1:1 on a 24 mm width sensor.

    I wanted to give it a bit of mystery in this shot but at some time I'll try and do some 'conventionals'.

    Hi David,

    I think hiding the claws helped a bit with the mystery, I was trying for the alien look

    I suspect it was some kind of something from the sea but I wasn't sure what it was...good shot too, Grahame...
