    Firehole River Hot Springs

I don't have the resources to dedicate to being a 'Travel Photographer', traveling around the world to spend two weeks in one spot for a single image! So, I am slowly coming to the realization that I am primarily a 'vacation photographer'.

You know the drill. Step off the tour bus and you have fifteen minutes to fight with 35 other amateur photographers (tourists) all trying to take the same snapshot of the same scene from the same location!

Sometimes you get a chance to get away from the crowd long enough to get a unique shot or two like this one of the Firehole River Geysers in Yellowstone National Park. Yes, there were tourists here but I zapped them all with the Photoshop Laser Eradication Ray Gun! Pesky tourists! That'll teach them.

Interesting how it can be both cold and hot at the same time!

Nice image, Frank. I hope your ray gun doesn't sterilize anyone.

I probably shouldn't consider myself a travel photographer for the reasons that you mentioned, but I do allow myself greater flexibility by traveling independently than by traveling in a group. If my wife and I want to stay a long time at a particular place, we do. If we want to stop along the side of the road, we do. If we want to take a hike, we do. If we want to go somewhere entirely different than where we initially planned, we do. Before we began renting apartments, which can't be rented at the last minute, we rarely booked hotels or motels in advance because doing so would impose undesirable limitations upon our schedule.

I have Photoshop, and I could not find the "Photoshop Laser Ray Eradication Gun."

    Cute Donald!

Once they are eradicated, sterilization is no longer an issue Mike. It was great when we could afford the RV. We pretty much did most of the National Parks at our own schedule. It's become much more catch as catch can of late.

Bruce, the Photoshop Laser Ray Eradication Gun is cleverly disguised as a clone tool so that it doesn't have to be registered with the government!

I like traveling both ways, in a group and booking my own, if I'm in a group and there is time I'll break away later and return to the spot.

Being an ex-commercial pilot didn't you gather any quirks from the company you worked for?

I try to do the same, John. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not sure what you mean by quirks Izzie? Although I am a pilot, I have a private, not a commercial license so all my flight time is on my own dime! LOL!

I feel your pain, Frank. One reason I don't do more landscape is to avoid "discussions" with my bride when we travel. I figure I'll concentrate more on landscape photography when we retire and can spend more time at places. And when I start getting to creaky in the joints to chase critters around

Nicely composed image and the dark sky is nice.

Oopppssss...sorry...I thought you were a commercial pilot at some stage of your life like my husband. Quirks of commercial and ex-commercial pilots includes free trips anywhere in the US and cheap fares overseas. That was what I meant plus other stuffs....

I think you mean "perks" or "perqs." Both are short versions of "perquisites."

If Frank is like me, we don't need to tell him about his quirks, as his wife surely takes care of doing that.

I got used to calling it "quirks" and no one corrected me before ... Thanks.

Travel vs Vacation photography - you got the definitions right. A 1 day stopover and a few pics hardly qualify. Having to suffer through billions of kilroy was here type shots, it is refreshing to see your pics (and those by Otavio, Mike, and the other similar minded). The former make me never want to visit that particular place whereas the latter make me want to. A bonus is that I get to ask what is this or that instead of what is that behind your head.

Always nice to see your travel photographs (oops).

Those shots always come with the following narrative: "This is Aunt Tillie standing in front of the _______________ (fill in the blank)."

My wife is easy to work with when I start getting lost in finding just the right perspective for a particular composition. She always brings a book along and is quite content to just sit and read.

The sky was very strange that day Dan. Parts of it were dark, menacing and broiling but the sun was shining through other parts. It was like there were demons wandering about looking for someone to drench while they laughed hysterically.

Thank you David! The Photoshop Laser Eradication Ray Gun doesn't leave any trace of the offenders when used properly. The white you see at ground level on the right is steam from one of the many geysers in the area. Most of the tourists that were zapped were driving back and forth on the road beyond the river!

LOL! As 'travel' photographs are usually a higher quality then 'vacation' photographs, I'll accept that as a very nice complement! Thank you very much, Bobo.
