Night long exposures @ the beach

    Dear fellows,

Here are some long exposures I just shot at the beach. Hope you like them. I shot them about 10PM local time. It was pretty warm there, with a nice ocean breeze, so I went with my wife and my son. We had a great fun while doing this. C&C welcomed, as always. Thanks for viewing. Regards,

Nice Otavio. I'm not sure that I would head out at 10PM but am thinking of trying my hand at shots just prior to or after sunset this weekend and I hope I have as much success as you!

Would you mind sharing the exif data? Particularly how long your exposures were and where you focused as this is something that I am trying t wrap my head around for shooting in low (or minimal light).

    Thanks for sharing

Hi, Shane! ...Maybe you would, if it was as hot as it was here, last night. Besides that, restaurants and bars are crowded this time (they do until about 3 AM), so it is pretty safe.

I dont mind at all, Shane! That is why where here. I added the Exif above each image (Shutter speed, aperture and ISO values). Regarding the focus, all of them were focused manually, as there was no brigthen area where the camera could autofocus. I turned the camera to a lit area (the bars came in hand!) and focused, manually, on a distance I believed was similar to the distance to the rocks (the live view helped to set the manual focus). Then I turned the camera again to compose the shot. I also set the "VR" off, as I was using a tripod.

Thank you for the shooting info Otavio. I went out yesterday morning and unfortunately didn't have near the success that you have shown us here.

First of all, I was out before even a hint of sun was in the sky (Colin would be proud) and had a much darker scene to deal with (no city lights). Despite having a flashlight with me and a familiarity with the area I found it very difficult to identify a good composition in the dark. On top of that I am still learning my D7000 and couldn't figure out how to get the dang thing into bulb mode to enable an exposure longer than 30 seconds. Needless to say I cam home a bit disappointed but I did learn something and will be taking a hard look at the images today to make some notes for further improvement. Practice makes perfect, or so they say

Shane, when you keep turning the wheel on your camera, once you hit the 30-second mark you will get into Bulb mode. Try it and let me know if you have any questions

Hi, Shane. Thanks for viewing and commenting. Regarding your question, to exceed the standard 30 seconds, you have to set the camera to manual mode ("M"). Once there, turn the dial until the maximum exposure time, ie 30s. One more "click" in the dial and you will go to "bulb" mode. Then you can use a bulb. If you prefer to use a IR (remote), select the trigger mode to IR (instant or 2s timer, as you wish) and the word "BULB" will be replaced by "TIMER". At this point your camera will start exposing the sensor at your first click (remote) and finish the picture when you click again. Hope that helps. Any issue, let me know if I can be of any help.

    Cheers,
