Yank Down Under Volume 3: Merimbula,NSW

I have to work some landscapes in here somewhere so here goes. Here are a couple from the coast between Bastion Point and Betka Beach at Malacoota.

Over the years I've found it to be surprisingly difficult to capture anything resembling the firsthand experience of storm waves assaulting a beach. But one has to keep trying. And there was ample opportunity...

And a couple of more birds. A red wattlebird (named for the red folds of skin under his cheeks) and I believe an Eastern Great Egret, not a great shot technically but my only one of that species.

Having enjoyed our time in the Coota and abandoning our plans to head further south, we reversed course and headed back up the coast. Somewhere along the way we ran across a total stranger who we knew nothing of who recommeded Merimbula. Since it was in the right direction and only a 100k or so up the road, we headed there. Plus the map showed it on another estuary with a nice beach.

Merimbula has a thriving oyster farming industry and a public boardwalk that runs several km along the river.

And an uninterrupted surf beach that runs over six km from Merimbula to Panbula. It took us a while but we finally caught on that if the Ozzies call it a surf beach, that means it's sand. Or at least more sand than rock. We walked a km or so from our digs to the beach and then without realizing how far it was, we set out and walked all the way down the beach. It was a long, hot trip back... :(

Half way down the beach. Yes that's my bride and yes she's carrying the camera gear and water :o

The Panbula end. Some cool looking rocks.

This thread is a bit long so I'll start another with the local birds.

Nice series....I particularly like the one with your bride in the shot as it shows the perspective of how big and wide the place is...pity you let her carry your gear...
