some more of my newbie shots....

I went for a walk on my break a couple days ago and before my fingers cramped from the recent frigid temps, these are some of the shots I got. : )

some more of my newbie shots....

Soooo.....the first one is a little rough looking, but I really wanted a picture of that and I knew it was going to melt away the next day, and this one was at home, not on my break. Also, I haven't been able to download the editing software that came with my camera, so in the meantime I am using an Android photo editing app and it compresses the file size of my original images. The black and white image is the way it is because those leaves really were bright green and they stood out from the other leaves, but if I left it in color, you couldn't really tell what I saw in real life, so that's my attempt to get across what I saw. Any input is appreciated : )

Great to see you out exploring with the camera Hope!

Some quick and selective comments that I mean in a constructive manner for future shoots:

#1 - This one had potential and is a good composition. I like the light coming through the snow hanging from the eave. Did you use a tripod? I can't see your settings but I expect that you needed to use a high ISO and that is what is causing the noise.

#5 - I also like this shot but think that you might want to consider a larger aperture next time. I like the fact the the background in blurred (small depth of field) but think that the softness in the front is a bit distracting. This one might be saved by the application of a fairly strong vignette. Here is a tighter crop with a white vignette (it's not perfect but just an idea for you to consider):

#7 - I'm not usually fan of selective color but I like it in this shot You were dealing with some pretty harsh lighting and I think that some of the white areas are blown but overall a good job. Again, consider the depth of field that you are using and if your results are as planned.

You can learn techniques, but having the creative eye for the shot in the first place is really what is important, and I think that you have that.

Depth of field comment, yes develop that area, watch you aperture.

If you need to keep the camera steady, use anything around..a wall, garden or street furniture, a friend even. Practice getting a steady position and press the shutter breathing out slowly, rather than holding your breath as many do.

Selective colour, really like this, bit blown due to the light intensity, care with the metering in such cases.

Blueberries, think about the background and even more about the shadow.

Ice crystals: Consider composition: This is a beautiful shot, but think about the rule of thirds (ok rule are made to be broken), but can I suggest this might have been a stronger shot if the crystals somehow where not dead centre.

I hope the c&c is useful, keep on creating…

All good advice. I like #7 and #6, #4 may work as black and white. Keep up the good work!

I'm a novice myself and don't feel particularly qualified to comment on the technical qualities. As I was looking at your photos it struck me that you certainly have an eye to pick up interesting shots. Really looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks for all the input everyone Here is the original for the ice picture some more of my newbie shots....
there's still quite a bit noise and honestly, it isn't the greatest picture, I just loved the look of it. My settings for that were 18 mm, 3.5 aperture, 1/500, and I SO 6400 (eek!)....didn't realize till now that I had set I SO that high, but the pop up flash was just making it awful, so I was trying not to use it. I can see how the softness at the front of the picture with the leaves is distracting. I will consider that in the future. My aperture for that one was 5.6 @ 55mm.

Is this maybe a little better? This is the original image, hasn't been post-processed yet. I sometimes forget about the rule of thirds, it is new to me and it's uneducated habit that I always center everything. Thanks for mentioning it though, I'd like it to be more at the forefront when I'm considering a shot. some more of my newbie shots....

Also, for those not a fan of selective color, here is the original of the b&w

Need to pay a bit of attention to composition, but nice shots and great colours, you've a good eye. I like them, thanks for sharing.

Thats great Hope, much more like it. Given the limited depth of field, I might also consider putting a vignette around the ice crystals, or getting creative with some filters in Photoshop?
