Shot this at 1/100 sec 5.6 iso 200 400 mm with my 50D. I would guess it to be about a 50% crop.

Looks a little soft because of the shutter speed. Did you use a tripod? If not , anything slower than 1/400s, you should.
Don't be afraid to use the ISO either. That 50D should be fine up to 1250. Use some noise reduction in post to clean it up and don't underexpose the shot.
A nice clean shot and composition(that's the hard part) , just need to get the sharpness in there.
