How can you get 18mp into an APSC cropped sensor?

    One pixel at a time

At the same pixel density we might end up with something in the range of 40MP to 50MP in the 1Ds4 (although I'd rather have less pixels and more dynamic range!)

Is this aimed at the same crowd as the 50D? I was looking at buying a 50D but now I'm intrigued by the new 7D =).

Not that it really matters, I wont be getting it until I'm out of college (and debt )

This 7D will be 5.4mp/cm2. The 50D (which is not without critics) is 4.5mp/cm2. The 5DMk1 is 1.5mp/cm2. I know technology has improved, but not that much.

whats the MP on the 5dMKI? is that the 5D version that you use?

Maymia or however u spell it has a 28MP camera only costs 14K,,,so I guess they figured out a way to stick that many pixels on a sensor,,,maybe Canon is just catching up?

oh and a 33 MP for 19K....incase anyone is intrested,,,hehe

    Apparantly so

Perhaps the "secret" is the concept that they're previously only taken the pixel density to what they felt was needed from a marketing perspective, rather than a technological one.

In my opinion the "MP Wars" whould have ended pretty much when they sailed past 8MP. I was showing a chap some of my 22 x 33" vertical shots today - some taken with an 8MP camera - some with a 10MP - and some with a 21MP camera ...

... you really can't see the difference.

The original 5D is "only" 12MP, but on a full frame sensor. The relatively low pixel density contributed greatly to it's excellent low noise characteristics.

    The 5DMk1 is 1.5mp/cm2, the 5DMkII is 2.4mp/cm2

The Mamiya camera has a sensor size of 44mmx33mm as it's medium format. A total area of 15cm2. So with 28mp that's 1.5mp/cm2. The same as the Canon 5d Mk1.

If it is only gonna sell for $1700, what did the skimp on to drop the "technology" mark-up?

Sorry,Kevin The 7D looks interesting, especially the AF point system.HD video capability sounds nice, but I would never use it.
I'm very pleased with the 50D and I am now contemplating a FF body to go with it.I just need to do some research on what body to get.If I hadn't moved from my 40D to the 50D,I would most likely buy the new 7D.

I have a 50D, and just bought a used 5D for £800 (not sure what that is in dollars). You can get them now the 5DMk2 is selling. I find the 5D goes great with the 50D, as they are suitable for different applications, just so long as your lenses are OK on both. I had to change one lens.

Used 5D goes from $1,200 US up $1,500.5D II around $2,500 used.Only have 2 Ef-S lenses,so I'm in pretty good shape with the others I own.I will need something wider than what I have in Ef lenses.50mm is the widest I have at the moment.

    That's easy ...

    Small budget = 2nd hand 5D

    Medium budget = New 5D2

    Large budget = New 1Ds3

    No budget = film camera
