Sunset in the Peace River Country

After a few months away from taking pictures I have been inspired once again by our wonderful sunsets.

Sort of looks familiar. I agree we have had some great sunsets the last several weeks, I think you have a great capture with the first image. I like the contrast of the sky with dark mountains in the second.

I'm jealous. I've been trying to catch something like that for weeks. Admittedly I've been trying to catch a sun rise but still...

I prefer the first one incidentally. I think there's probably too much of the foreground in the second. The black is just catching my attention a bit too much.

    Hi Cheri,

I prefer the first image too.

I believe those are (underlit) lenticular clouds, quite rare and form in mountainous regions.

    Cheers,

    Hi, Cheri

Love your first image. Dave is correct in identifying these as lenticular (as in "lense")- we have none where I am from and they are always a treat to see. They originate where there is a sufficient quantity of stable but very moist air that condenses as it descends the downside of mountains. Pilots avoid them like the plague as the surrounding air is very unstable and turbulent (exception being glider pilots who actually seek them out for the strong updrafts they often have)

Thank you for all your comments. The comments about what kind of clouds are in the picture are very interesting and make me want to do some research on them. We do have A very large dam in that area of the peace river valley would that contribute to the kind of cloud formations I captured?
