There were some fireworks happening down by the river tonight, so figured I would try my hand and some photos for the first time.

I set the camera for bulb exposure (which i was learning as i went). And I hoped for the best. I like the outcome of some of pics, made for interesting photos and I look forward to teaching my self how to better improve this technique.

The third one seems a bit fuzzy, not sure i changed something on Elements or now.

All we need now is the smoke on the water I love No2 a really unusual shot. No 3 is also good but the dodah at the bottom left spoils the symmetry. I cannot be helped since these things are very hit and miss. I would be very pleased with these images if I were you

Hi Bill,

#2 for me, possibly #3 if it were less noisy.
Thinks; possibly you hit auto-levels or something in #3 if you think it was an Elements induced problem.

You're really gonna have to get a more stable tripod by the way

Do you know if I can do shots like this with my compact camera
( Canon Powershot A 470). I had no experiences in doing "night shots".
Would like to try it.
Can you give me some helpful informations and practical instructions?

Hi Brigitte,

Looking at Steve's Digicams review for your camera, which is invaluable for questions like this, the short answer is Yes.

You have a "Firework" scene mode and the camera is capable of upto 15 seconds exposure time, which I'd say is more than enough to get something like these shots. I have no personal experience either, but I'm sure someone here will have. There might be some guidance in the camera manual if you have it.

Unfortunately, Bill's EXIF data got stripped in the post processing, so I can't look up what setting he used.

I'd suggest you practice on street lights tonight, you're obviously going to handhold to get the wobbly effect anyway, so give it a go and if anything good comes of it, you know where we are.

Thanks much for your helpful comments and the Link to Steves Camera rewiev.
I had a look at the side as I decide to buy a camera.
Okay for the first time I will try out by doing photographs of city lights.
It is maybe easier then buildings or other scenes. .

I decide to post them in a seperate thread. Maybe you and others can add them some comments to it.

They really do make for some interesting pictures thats for sure. And yes I need a better tripod, actually, I just need a tripod all together. I don;t have the cash right now for one, so, so far everything i have done is free hand. My hands were starting to cramp last ngiht, sure wish i had a tripod.

Also, I still have the Exif data, due to i usually keep my originals.

1. f/6.3 exposure time 1 sec, ISO 400, 105 mm FL

2. f/6.3, exposure time 1 sec, ISO 400, 300mm FL

3. f/6.3, exposure time 2 sec., ISO 400, 90 mm FL

Also, just looking at the original for the third one, the picture is badly out of focus, and thus very noisy on the original as well.
