I much prefer the second of these two. I think the first one is too much of a 'general scene', without any clear centre of attention. The second one takes us in nice and tight and, again, is one of these where you don't need to see the whole vista in order to be able to understand the story in the image

Hi James, I much prefer a less confused image as most folks need a place in the image where their eye can rest for a moment then continue to explore the image. With this type of image I feel like there is no place to stop to enjoy the feeling of the image.

Re: Down by the harbour
For me, James, the first one is OK as a general historical record but it is somewhat confused by having too many boats. Also, I would slightly increase the brightness level.
Although the second shot has less boats I still find it a jumble which shows bits of different boats without any real purpose.
I would prefer to search out some 'interesting boats' and specifically photograph them, even if it does mean including a few bits of other vessels.
But boats all together in a marina type setting will always be difficult to photograph well. And in this particular case they are jammed in so tight it makes me wonder how the inner boats actually move anywhere.
