Of all the birds I shoot, herons and egrets probably account for at least 50%. Very elegant and great subjects.

    Very nice captures.

And egrets probably account for 90% of my bird photo rejects. They are so difficult to get correctly exposed. But the exposure is perfect here.

Geoff, all the egrets were shot at -1.0 EV. I adjusted the exposure in ACR until the feathers were properly exposed without the highlights burning out. The pure white is very difficult to expose without the highlights burning out.

Yes Joe, I find that avoiding bright sunlight also helps. Lightly overcast days seem to produce best results, but they are still a great problem when walking around in black mud.

But they have become as common as robins around here so now I usually just photography them when they are doing something unusual.

There are little fish hiding in this crab store box.

This was a dull day but I'm still a little overexposed.

Interesting series, the day I took the ones I posted my wife shot a snowy stealing fish out of a bucket that a gentleman with a net had just caught.
