EF 70 to 200F/4L IS USM and x1.4Tele-extender

For those of you who use the EF70 to 200F/4L IS USM and have used this lens with the Canon 1.4MkII (or MkIII) tele-extender:
Could you please provide any feedback on this combination in regard to both shooting and results.
Could you also mention what camera is being used.

Any comments regarding experience with this combination using a 7D for Outdoor; Daytime; Hand Held Shooting would be particularly useful.

    Thank you,
    WW

    Have a guess :)

I haven't used that combo Bill, but in theory - taking all of the periphery into account, I'd expect pretty reasonable results, albeit with a probably need for slightly more agressive & careful sharpening.

    Thanks for the rapid response

    That is my "theory" also.

Noted the PP sharpening. Thanks for pointing to that - very important to note.

    regards,

My files are in a mess right now and I cannot search by EXIF. Hopefully, when I am totally switched over to Lightroom, I will be able to search by lens, etc.

Relying on my memory; when I used my 1.4x TC (Canon Mk-i) with my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens, there was a slight deterioration in IQ and AF speed. However, the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens is so sharp initially and its AF is so fast, that the deterioration didn't seem to bother me a great deal.

I most often use the TC with my 300mm f/4L IS lens and it provides very acceptable results with that lens ending with a 420mm (672mm equivalent) f/5.6 lens with IS. I don't often hand hold this combination but, the IS helps dramatically when using a monopod.

I have heard, but have no experience using, that the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Mkii lens coupled with the Canon 2x TC Mk.iii provides exceptional results. A 140-400mm (224-640mm equivalent on a 1.6x camera) f/5.6 lens would be quite versatile and would maintaim AF with the 1.6x camera.

I wonder how the 2x TC mk-iii would work with the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. It is a shame that when Canon introduced the 7d camera, that it did not include AF capability at f/8 in its many innovations. Wouldn't the 400mm f/5.6L be nice combined with a 1.4x Tc; if auto-focus could be maintained. Imagine an 896mm equivalent f/8 lens. That would be awesome....

    Thanks Richard,
I appreciate all the other info especially re the 300/4 - as I have not used that combination.

    FYI what I have used:
I can confirm that the 70 to 200/2.8L IS MkII + the x2.0MkIII tele-extender is exceptional (all things considered): and better than the 70 to 200F/2.8L (NOT IS) + x2.0MkII tele-extender arrangement which I sometimes use.
I can also confirm that the 70 to 200/2.8L (NOT IS) with a x2.0MkII is slightly better than the EF70 to 200F/2.8L IS and the same x2.0MkII tele-extender.

    Thanks again for your assistance.

    WW
