Which do you prefer and why?

#2 is better because you can tell what's the subject right away and #1 doesn't have that.

Joseph, I like the first one better because the grass adds depth to the photo, and because I don't like the dark cloud behind the ship in the second one. However, in my opinion the first could be tidied up a bit - the horizon needs straightening and the grass shouldn't be touching the ship. Also the grass shadows are an extra detail not needed in this image. Hope you don't mind this quick edit -

They are totally different images. The first is a beach scene with a boat in the background while the second is a shot of a boat fishing close to the beach.

You can't really compare them. And if I had to choose just one, it would depend on the reasons behind the choice.

I like I can see more detail on the fishing boat.

On the first one I'm not sure if I should look at the shadows, the grass or the boat.

On MrB's version the shadows are gone, it is easier to follow the shot.

I prefer #1. It gives me the feel of someone waiting for a ship to come rescue them. The only minor thing is that I would like the boat to be slightly more to the right. Great shots on both.

On pure photography learning it would have to be the second one as you have depth to the image.

Im thinking if there was a do over available, (considering I dont know what lenses you used) I might move back, use longer lenses, get a greater DOF, and make the grass clump less prominent, yet still there… because the second one… it looks rather plain with just sand. Like I said, Im not sure of the whole situation you were in so this advice may work or not?
