The CiC Universal "Shoot the Moon" Event - October 8th!

This thread is to promote the 1st Annual CiC "Shoot the Moon" event.

Steaphany came up with a superb date for this event, as Oct. 8th is the selected
day for the "International Observe the Moon Night"

October 8th - A reason to pull out your long lenses

The Moon will be 85% full, meaning that there will be a terminator line to give definition to
craters, etc., but it will also be very bright, so even those in light polluted, inner cities should
be able to take wonderful images.

You can check the Moon rise and set times for your location:

    http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/moonrise.html

A quick look shows that everyone should see the Moon at some time after dark, and
many will also get some outstanding daytime/evening views.

It will be a wonderful event having so many photographers from around the globe taking
Moon images on a single night.

Chime in here if you want to join the fun, or post your Moon imaging tips to help others get
    good results.

Unfortunately for me, this will be at 4:27 in the late afternoon, pre daylight savings time ajustment and therefore, quite light outside. Perhaps later in the evening, I'll be able to snap off a few shots.

I am looking forward to that day, and I will gladly join you. I just love to shoot the moon, there is a natural beauty about it, especially if the craters are visable.

I will certainly load up the Sigma 120-400 and see what I can acheive .......... or maybe the Tokina 11-16 and go for the ultra wide angle night landscape.

Joking aside, I will mark my calendar. I will have moved to the country by then (in the process of moving now), so there will be no more city light polution to keep me from seeing the moon. I'm looking forward to it.

I will pray for good weather!

Mike, have you contacted http://observethemoonnight.org/ to see if they can give some exposure to our little project, as was suggested by Steaphany in this thread?

I just checked the http://observethemoonnight.org/ and our CiC Universal "Shoot the Moon" Event was not listed. I'll be taking care of that right now and I'll post the link as an reply post when I have it up.

I'm hoping that it stays cloud free here too, but unlike a traditional Star Party where a group gathers at one location and the presence of a cloudy sky means the success of the event is either all or nothing, the CiC Universal "Shoot the Moon" Event is global and I'm sure we'll have participants with clear, or partially clear sky's. Remember, even if there are a few clouds, you can still get some great images.

One of the things to remember, the slogan that the International Observe the Moon Night's web site has is "What does the Moon mean to YOU ?" and as stated by the organizers on the site

The International Observe the Moon Night Team consists of scientists, educators, and Moon enthusiasts from government, non-profit organizations, and businesses throughout the United States and across the globe. We believe in the inspirational power of the Moon — a celestial body that has influenced human lives since the dawn of time. International Observe the Moon Night has created the opportunity to for people to take notice of the Moon’s beauty and share that experience with one another. Through International Observe the Moon Night, we hope instill in the public a sense of wonderment and curiosity about our Moon. Our partnerships enable us to stay up to date with the latest and greatest scientific discoveries about Earth’s nearest neighbor, and we strive to bring those discoveries to the public.
So, along with scientifically valuable lunar images, a few clouds and a bit of photographic artistry will still quality as a success !

    Way Cool!!!

Very well written press release..thanks for posting that Steaphany!

I've also roped in a few of the deep space and planetary imagers over on Astroholic, so we'll be able to add their prime focus pics to the many from CiC members. Hoping that someone with the skills to do so can ultimately combine them all into a video that can be posted for the public to access.

I have several software tools to compile a collection of still images into a flash slide show, including various transition and panning effects, along with music. Is that hat you were thinking Mike ? or would you prefer an actual youtube style video ?

I'm thinking our results should not only be posted here, but we should have our members work featured on the International Observe the Moon Night web site as well.

I wish I had a good enough camera and knew enough to shoot the moon! I will enjoy seeing all your shots though. Perhaps next year Grasshopper will have attained enough knowledge to participate!

Remember though, Liz, that a moon shot doesn't have to be a close up of the moon. Just do a search on 'moonrise hernandez' to see probably the greatest one of them all, from the master.

I just looked at it. WOW! He really was the master! We get some beautiful moon rises here in the northwest. Hopefully in Oct it will be clear. The fall ones can be the most beautiful "harvest" moons...huge, orange, amazing. If I use my little G10 with a tripod, how would you suggest I do it? Maybe I will give it a "shot"!! Pun intended!

Click on the Discussion Categories tab in the menu bar at the top of the page and select 'astrophotography'. In there you'll find lots of discussion about taking moon shots. One of my own is here, and the details of what I did are included. It's two images blended - one for the moon and one for everything else.
