Well, I just jumped in the deep end. I ordered a 70-200 f4 is.
    I was taking some photos at my son's hockey game and I kept thinking ... F4 vs f5.6 ... 200 vs 135 ... Iso 1600 vs 3200 ... Sharpness vs bleh ... Hmmmmmmm
Good thing I have a good job to pay for this!
    Thanks everyone for your input.

I think that you will be very happy with the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. It can be used under some fairly low light conditions. Granted these dancers were not moving at hockey speeds but, the lighting was fairly dim...

Congratulations, I guarantee you will not be dissapointed. I still sleep with mine at night sometimes

It is my "always on" lens and hasn't let me down yet.

    Congrats Brian,

We'll give you a few days to recover and then start planning your next major purchase for you

Thanks, but I may need more than a few days. I'm working all weekend and haven't had much time yet with my new toy errr lens.
From what I've seen so far, I will definitely need a new wide lens too

    In case anyone is interested....
I haven't had much time to tinker with the new lens due to work
But here is a quick sharpness test, pixel peeping at 100% view at 1024, max zoom, and f/4. Pretty sharp!

And here is a photo of the sunset behind my japanese maple. I always wondered why the reds were so dull in my sunset photos, not in this case! The color is extremely accurate to what my eye saw, and neither photo has had any editing.

Don't forget though Brian that EVERY RAW capture still needs - at a minimum - capture sharpening to overcome the softening effects of the anti-aliasing filter, digitisation process, and demosaicing process.

I've applied standard capture sharpening to the first image ...

Oh I did not forget. That was part of my point about no PP. Simply amazing, and at 200mm and f/4 I imagine that is about as UNsharp as that lens can get.
Thank you for making a good point clear that I did not.
I've never ever been been able to get that much read in a sunset before without some Post processing.
