First one is a nice shot James. Nice use of DOF and good and sharp. Good eye contact as well. The second is a little soft.

The first one is certainly an excellent photo.

A shutter speed of 1/800 should be fast enough for the second photo if the deer is only moving slowly. But it is slightly softer, as Paul mentioned, which is a pity.

The shallow depth of field may be part of the problem but I can't see that the camera has auto focused on another area. Were you panning? I'm just wondering if the deer has moved slightly towards or away from the focus area before you clicked the shutter.

It is still a good photo; but the first one is absolutely perfectly sharp.

Thanks Paul and Geoff glad to hear one made the cut. I took both of those with my 400 handheld, must of got lucky on the 1st one. The deer in that area see alot of tourists, allowing me to get pretty close. I cant wait to go back in late summer/ early fall.
